Every year one film quietly takes over Halloween, and 2026 belongs to Project Hail Mary. The costume is unusual in a good way: no mask, no wig, no rented suit. One sweater does almost all of the work, and the rest is clothes most people already own.

The one piece that carries the costume
Ryland Grace's fox cardigan is the whole silhouette. It's a chunky, oversized, full-zip Cowichan-style cardigan in cream with a russet fox motif across the chest and back. Knitters know the design by its older name — the Wolf Cardigan, a Mary Maxim pattern first published in 1959.
That's the piece people recognise from across a room. Get it right and the rest of the costume is almost incidental.
Ours is hand-knit, finished and in stock, from $146, in sizes XXS to 6X. It is knitted by the women of the Dalyasan village association in Türkiye — one cardigan at a time, about 40 to 60 hours each.
The rest of the look
- A plain shirt underneath. A simple crew tee or a soft henley. Nothing with a logo.
- Straight, unfussy trousers. Dark chinos or plain jeans. The cardigan is the loud part; everything else should get out of its way.
- Tired hair and a three-day beard, if you can grow one. Grace is a man who has not slept.
- Optional props. A notebook, a mug, a small alien companion made of whatever you have. People who know the story will get it instantly.
That's it. This is a costume you can wear to work the next day.
The part people get wrong: timing
Hand-knitting doesn't scale. One cardigan is one knitter for 40 to 60 hours, and that maths doesn't change in October. So the honest answer about deadlines looks like this:

US shipping is free with tracking. Europe is a flat rate with all import duties covered, so nothing is owed at the door.
Sizing it like a costume, not a sweater
On screen the cardigan hangs loose. If you size it like a normal fitted sweater it will read as the wrong garment.
- Measure your chest, then add 4–6 inches for a comfortable oversized fit.
- Want the full slouchy screen drape? Add 8 inches or more.
- Between two sizes, go up. Nobody has ever complained that this cardigan was too cosy.

What if you'd rather knit it yourself?
