Ryland Grace Cosplay & Costume: the complete Project Hail Mary look
Every piece of the costume, how it should fit, and the one item everything else is built around.
Since Project Hail Mary reached screens, one costume has quietly taken over conventions and Halloween parties: a tired scientist in an oversized fox cardigan. It is an unusually kind costume to cosplay — no armour, no prosthetics, no wig required. Get the cardigan right and the rest falls into place in an afternoon.
We knit that cardigan for a living, so people write to us about this costume constantly. Here is everything we have learned, in the order you should buy it.

1. The cardigan — the whole costume, really
This is the piece people recognise from across a room, and it is the one thing you should not improvise. The look is a cream, chunky, hand-knit zip cardigan in the Cowichan tradition, with a bold fox motif across the front and back, a shawl-style collar and two deep front pockets.
Two details separate a cardigan that reads instantly from one that reads as “some jumper”:
- It must be hand-knit and chunky. Machine-knit fleece versions look flat under any light. The whole charm is the visible, slightly irregular stitch.
- It must be oversized. The character lives in this thing. It should look like it has been slept in.
2. Knit it yourself, or buy it finished?
This is the first real decision, and it is worth answering honestly before you spend anything.
The design everyone is chasing was made for the film. Its costume designers, Glyn Dillon and Dave Crossman, started from a 1959 Mary Maxim pattern called the Wolf Cardigan and redrew its wolves as foxes. Mary Maxim is a family company, founded in Canada, that has been selling bulky graph-knit cardigans since the 1950s; after the film, it released the original wolf pattern again as a kit with the yarn included. If you knit, that kit is a genuinely lovely project and we would send you there ourselves. One thing to know: this is not a beginner garment. It is bulky colourwork across the whole body, and even confident knitters describe it as a multi-week project.
WHICH ROUTE IS YOURS
Knit it yourself if you already knit colourwork, you enjoy the process as much as the result, and your deadline is months away rather than weeks. The pattern is inexpensive; the yarn and your time are the real cost.
Buy it finished if you do not knit, or there is a date on the calendar. Most people who write to us fall here — they found the pattern, worked out it was forty-plus hours of colourwork, and decided their convention was in three weeks.

3. What goes underneath
A blue chambray or light denim work shirt, buttoned most of the way, collar left soft. This is what sells the “scientist who has been awake for three days” silhouette, and it is the detail most people skip. A plain white or grey crew tee also works if you want the sleepier version of the look.
Below: straight or slightly relaxed blue jeans, nothing distressed, nothing skinny. Comfortable trainers or plain boots. The costume is deliberately ordinary from the waist down — that is the point.
4. The jumpsuit variant
If you want the shipboard version instead, swap everything for an orange flight-style jumpsuit with mission patches. It photographs brilliantly and takes five seconds to explain at a party. Many cosplayers do both and switch halfway through the evening — the cardigan for arrival, the jumpsuit for photos.
5. Hair, face and posture
- Hair: slightly overgrown and unstyled. Skip the product.
- Face: a few days of stubble if you can grow it. Tired eyes are canon.
- Posture: hands in the cardigan pockets, shoulders slightly forward. Half the character is in how the cardigan is worn, not the cardigan itself.
6. Getting the fit right
For the intended silhouette, take your normal size and go one up. If you are between sizes, always round up. The cardigan should sit low on the hips and the sleeves should reach past the wrist bone.
Our size guide lists finished garment measurements rather than body measurements, so measure a jumper you already own and compare. If you are still unsure, message us — we would rather spend five minutes helping than have you guess.
7. How long before the convention should I order?
Standard sizes are in stock and dispatch within 2–7 days, with delivery of roughly 3–10 business days after that. For a specific date — Halloween, a convention, a shoot — give yourself three weeks of margin. If you need custom measurements, allow 1–2 weeks, because that piece is knitted from scratch for you.

And if you are knitting it yourself, work backwards generously. Bulky colourwork takes longer than you expect, and nobody enjoys finishing a sleeve at two in the morning on the 30th of October.
